Hamilton wins an absorbing German Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton brilliantly won the German Grand Prix on Sunday, with Fernando Alonso 2nd and Mark Webber 3rd after a terrific 3 way battle for the win.

The Start

Hamilton got away beautifully and took the lead from Webber, with Alonso up to 3rd,Vettel down to 4th with Nico Rosberg in 5th.Jenson Button had a terrible start and dropped to 11th and after making his way back up to 6th he would retire which a Hydraulics problem on Lap 36.

Alonso would run wide at turn 3 on Lap 2 which gifted 3rd to Sebastian,However Alonso got the place back on Lap 8 by outbraking Vettel on the inside into turn 1.

Paul Di Resta was tagged from behind by Heidfeld at Turn 3 which meant both drivers dropped to the back of the field.

Vettel would soon be dropped by the Top 3 and then spun after touching a wet white line but just managed to keep 4th place.Michael Schumacher would also spin in the exact spot on Lap 24 when right behind teammate Rosberg. He would come back through the field and finished 8th passing Alguersuari and Petrov nicely.

Then drama on Lap 11,Nick Heidfeld try to go the right hand side of the track for the left/right chicane but Buemi didn’t see him and squeezed him off the track and Heidfeld for a split second got airborne and would retire.

Then on Lap 12,Massa cruised passed Rosberg down the straight into turn 1.Later on in the lap Hamilton ran deep into the chicane,Webber nailed him into the final corner but then Hamilton immediately got back passed Webber by using the slipstream and Mclaren’s extra top speed down the straight.

Webber pitted on Lap 14 and came out 6th,he quickly passed Sutil and caught up to Massa and Vettel very quickly,Massa passed Vettel into the chicane at the end of Lap 15,Hamilton and Alonso were in the pits,Vettel also went in.

Hamilton and Alonso just rejoined behind Webber, who got them on the undercut with Massa in the lead.Massa would then pit which meant Webber led from Hamilton and Alonso with Massa 4th and Vettel 5th,who could not pass Massa despite having the faster car.

In the second stint Webber could not pull away from Hamilton and Alonso and was the first of the three to pit on Lap 30.Hamilton pitted a lap later and jumped ahead of Webber despite Webber’s best efforts to go round the outside at Turn 2 to pass Lewis,Lewis ran him wide, fairly.Alonso then pitted and came out in front but Lewis nicely went round the outside of Alonso into turn 2 to take the lead.

Hamilton and Alonso then started to ease away from Webber,Mark did not help himself by making a mistake at the chicane costing him some time.Meanwhile Vettel still could not pass Massa for 4th,while Adrian Sutil was driving very nicely and worked up to 6th ahead of the Mercedes drivers.

Hamilton then pitted on Lap 50 after Mclaren had seen Petrov do personal bests in all 3 sectors on the medium tyre and it worked because Alonso pitted 2 laps later but was still behind Lewis.Webber ran on the softs till Lap 56 but the strategy didn’t work out and rejoined in 3rd place where he was before the stops.

Vettel and Massa were still battling hard for 4th and both pitted with 1 lap to go to put on the medium tyre.A great stop by Red Bull meant Vettel jumped passed Massa for 4th and gain an extra 2 points which could be crucial at the end of the season.

Hamilton would go on and take a superb win,Alonso 2nd,Webber 3rd,Vettel 4th,Massa 6th,Sutil 6th,Rosberg 7th,Schumacher 8th,Kobayashi 9th and Petrov 10th.
