Moto GP season Review

Casey Stoner won his second Moto GP world championship after a fantastic debut season at Respol Honda, however that was overshadowed by the tragic death of the very talented Marco Simoncelli at the Malaysian Grand Prix last month.

Qatar:Casey Stoner would win on his debut for Honda, taking a comfortable win from Lorenzo and Pedrosa, who said he lost feeling in his left arm after the midway point.Dovizioso was 4th and Simoncelli 5th after an epic battle.Valentino Rossi finished 7th on his debut for Ducati.

Jerez:A dramatic race,Rossi was flying on the Ducati from 12th on the grid and had caught the top guys but fell off when trying to overtale Stoner which took Stoner out,Stoner retired,Casey was seething after the race when Valentino went to apologise.

Rossi though remounted and would eventually finish 5th.Simoncelli who had a comfortable lead, crashed out at Turn 1 and blew a great chance to win his first ever Moto GP race,Lorenzo would take the lead and would go on to win,Pedrosa would finish 2nd after Spies crashed out of 2nd near the end,Hayden would take 3rd after Edwards’ bike cruelly broke down at the start of the final lap.

Portugal:very tactical race,Pedrosa sat behind Lorenzo for a large chunk of the race but then made his move in the final few laps and quickly pulled away from Jorge and Dani would take the win,Lorenzo 2nd,Stoner a distant 3rd after lacking pace which was very unusual for him 2011,Dovizioso was 4th after an epic battle with Rossi who finished in 5th.

Le Mans:Casey Stoner took a dominant win but there would be controversy behind.Simoncelli had caught Pedrosa and attempted to pass Pedrosa round the outside into the left hander, and they came together,Pedrosa fell off and ended up in the gravel and would break his collarbone and would miss the next 3 races.

Simoncelli would get a ride through penalty for the move and would finish 5th in the end.Dovizioso finished 2nd,Rossi got his first podium for Ducati in 3rd and Lorenzo was 4th after a great 3 way battle

Barcelona:A very boring race,Stoner walked it,comfortably beating Lorenzo,Spies was 3rd,which was his first podium of the year,Dovizioso was 4th,Rossi 5th and Simoncelli the pole sitter,6th.Colin Edwards missed the race after breaking his collarbone earlier in the weekend.

Silverstone:A dramatic race in horrendous conditions.Crutchlow the home hero missed the race after breaking his collarbone in qualifying.Lorenzo the championship leader crashed out of 3rd place,Simoncelli then took over 3rd place after Lorenzo binned it but he would also crash out of the race.Stoner would brilliantly win by over 10 seconds from Dovizioso,Edwards was an amazing 3rd,just a week after breaking his collarbone,Hayden 4th,Bautista 5th and Rossi 6th.

Assen:A dramatic race,Lorenzo and Simoncelli came together on the opening lap after Simoncelli lost control of the bike due to a cold tyre after attempting to go up the inside, both men would remount though.

Spies would lead from start to finish to take his maiden Moto GP win, made a lot easier after his teammate’s fall,Stoner finished 2nd with Dovizioso 3rd,Lorenzo made an incredible recovery and finished 6th.

Mugello: Dani Pedrosa returned but clearly was not fully fit and finished 8th,meanwhile there was a fantastic battle for the win,Stoner quickly pulled out a 2 second lead over Lorenzo and Dovizioso but in the final 10 laps both of them started to catch Stoner and Lorenzo with 7 laps to go passed Stoner and at the start of the final lap,Dovizioso passed Stoner,we found out after the race that Stoner had an overheating tyre issue.Lorenzo won,Dovi 2nd,Stoner 3rd,Spies 4th and Simoncelli 5th and Rossi 6th.

Germany: Dani Pedrosa was back to his best in Germany,a circuit he is mega at,he brilliantly won the race after a great three way battle with himself,Stoner and Lorenzo.Jorge brilliantly passed Stoner into the last corner to take 2nd place, despite running wide into Turn 11 and seemingly blowing his chance.

Dovizioso was 4th,Spies 5th and Simoncelli 6th after a fantastic battle, with Spies getting Marco in the final corner and the same could be said for the Bautista,Rossi and Hayden battle.Bautista would get 7th,Hayden was 8th,Rossi 9th after qualifying in only 16th place, last row of the grid.A very big low for the legendary Italian.

Laguna Seca:After been beaten in the previous two races Stoner fought back by winning the US GP,passing Pedrosa and then caught Lorenzo passed him with 6 laps to go,Lorenzo finished 2nd,Pedrosa was 3rd and admitted he was still not 100% after his Le Mans crash and it showed with him dropping away from the top 2 towards the end,Spies finished 4th,Dovi 5th,Rossi 6th and teammate Hayden 7th after a race long battle.Simoncelli crashed out.

Brno:Casey Stoner took a very comfortable win at Brno, easily winning after Pedrosa crashed out on Lap 3,Dovizioso finished 2nd,Simoncelli 3rd,his first ever podium,Lorenzo 4th after making a tyre choice error and Ben Spies in 5th.

Indy:Stoner once again would take the victory, after falling behind teammate Pedrosa at the start,he would pass Dani on Lap 7 and pulled away to win by nearly 5 seconds from the Spaniard .

After a shocking start where he was 9th after Lap 1,Spies had a stormer of a race to come back through and finish 3rd,sealing his place on the podium after passing teammate Lorenzo, who was 4th,Dovizioso was 6th with Bautista 6th.

Misano:A very dull race,Lorenzo pulled away from Stoner after Casey was right behind him early on and Jorge would take a comfortable win from Pedrosa, who passed Stoner late in the race for 2nd place. After the race Stoner said he was very fatigued due to so many races in a short period of time.

In the only bright spot in the race, yet another epic battle between Dovizioso and Simoncelli,in the end Simoncelli got 4th place by just +0.037 of a second, with Spies just 0.7 back in 6th.

Aragon:A very dull race once again,Stoner stormed to another win with teammate Pedrosa 2nd,Lorenzo got 3rd after Simoncelli ran wide while running 3rd,he would still finish 4th though,Spies was 5th after fading on the last 10 laps and dropped from 3rd to 4th.

There was one super battle with Cruthclow,Rossi and Aoyama, after many overtakes,it was Crutchlow who came out on top to finish 9th,Rossi 10th,Aoyama 11th.

Japan:By far and away the best race of the year.3 riders,Dovizioso,Simoncelli and Crutchlow jumped the start and would get ride through penalties While Rossi fell off his bike on Lap 1 after contact with Lorenzo with Spies also involved and was forced through the gravel trap,Rossi was out

Then Stoner who was in the lead and looked like he was on for another win but then on Lap 4 heading down the hill into Turn 11,his bike starting shaking quite badly after hitting a bump and could not slow down quickly enough and went of into the gravel trap and dropped to 5th.

So Pedrosa was gifted the lead and would go on to win from Lorenzo, with Stoner recovering to 3rd,Simoncelli 4th and Dovizioso 5th after working there way back through the field and having yet another epic battle.Bautista and Elias both crashed out while running in the top 6 to ruin there chances of getting there best results of the year.
Australia:After Jorge Lorenzo had a big crash on sunday morning which ruled him out of the race,Stoner just needed a top 6 at his home race to seal the championship.
Stoner led away and would quickly build up a big lead from Simoncelli,Dovizioso and Pedrosa, with the Honda factory bikes having a great battle for 3rd.On lap 14 after just passing Bautista for 5th,Rossi fell  at the Turn 10 Hairpin on Lap 14.
The rain then started to get worse on Lap 24,Stoner still had a comfortable lead but Simoncelli and Dovizioso really started to close in late on,while Pedrosa decided to settle for 4th while Bautista,Crutchlow and Aoyama all crashed out.
Stoner though would hang on and take the win to seal the championship in style with Marco fending of Andrea for 2nd place after yet another amazing battle between them with Pedrosa 4th and Edwards 5th.
Malaysia:
Valencia:A very emotional weekend after the death of Marco, they paid a great tribute to the wonderful Italian
Pedrosa led away but would soon be passed by Stoner.

However there would be drama behind,Dovizioso, who had made a good start, moved slightly across in front of Bautista and Dovi’s rear wheel hit Bautista’s front wheel so Bautista fell whose bike then hit Rossi’s and De Puniet and Hayden would also go down,Hayden damaged his wrist but the other 3 were ok.

Stoner at one stage had a 10 second lead from Dovizioso,Spies and Pedrosa. However after a damp weekend, the rain really began to fall with 8 laps to go and then the race got very exciting indeed.

Spies quickly passed Pedrosa and Dovi,Pedrosa quickly dropped away as Ben and Andrea charged after Casey and then with 3 laps to go Ben took the lead after Casey ran wide in turn 6,Dovizioso soon decided to settle for 3rd place to seal 3rd in the championship

Then on the final lap,Crutchlow and Abraham, who had a race long battle, both passed Pedrosa to move into 4th and 5th.However Abraham then tried to pass Crutchlow into the Turn 9 hairpin but Crutchlow shut the door,Abraham hit his bike and Karel went down but would remount.

At the front, heading into the last turn,it looked like Spies had it in the bag but Stoner got an incredible exit and powered past him just before the line.So victory for Stoner,Spies 2nd,Dovi 3rd,Crutchlow 4th,Pedrosa 5th.

So Congraulations Casey Stoner on winning the title,I think there is more titles in this man, fantastic season and the fastest man on the grid now, good luck to the rest in 2012 trying to beat him because they need it!

RIP Marco Simoncelli

But the final bit of my review is dedicated to Marco Simoncelli, who was tragically killed in a freak accident at the Malaysian GP last month at the age of 24

I only got to know about Marco in 2009 in 250cc when he lost out on the title to Aoyama

Marco was an amazing guy, always had a smile on his face, lots of charisma and was always upbeat and his massive hair.He was bloody fast as well if slightly wild sometimes, but was starting to show controlled aggression before his passing and for sure would have been a champion in the future.

His death will leave a big hole in Moto GP and will take a long time to find another great character like him.

You will never be forgotten and you will always be in your hearts #58 x

 an incredibly moving video

Ciao Marco x
